The Iniquity of the Amorites

And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.  Genesis 15:16

When we are truly walking in the obedience of faith, things do not always make sense.  God usually has us on a need-to-know basis by revealing things to us as we go and keeping us dependent on the leading of His Spirit.  At times when it seems that things are not going the way we imagined or the way we think they should, it can be easy to wonder if we are doing something wrong or if we have missed God’s prompting somehow.  We look around and wonder how this could be God’s will for our lives, but still our faith tells us that God’s plans and purposes are always good and loving, so we press on and wait for the Lord.  If you are in a position like that today, then I hope this will offer you some relief and edification.

Sometimes, it doesn’t have much to do with you.  God is always working and doing multiple things at the same time.  In this passage of Genesis, God is telling Abraham that his descendants will be slaves of other people for 400 years before possessing the Promised Land.  It doesn’t sound too loving but when we look more closely at what God does during this time of slavery, we realize that He used those 400 years to grow Abraham’s descendants into a great and mighty nation and then delivered them out of oppression with great wealth.  At the same time, God was offering mercy to the Amorites who are the descendants of Noah’s son, Ham, who started sinning almost the moment he stepped off the ark.  Only after 400 years of patience with the Amorites will their sin reach a level deserving of God’s righteous judgment.  It is at that time and by that righteous judgment which God gives the land of the Amorites to Abraham’s descendants.  It is then that the nation of Israel possess the Promised Land.

So be encouraged!  God is working on you and forming you into someone who will be great and mighty for His Kingdom.  God is also working on many other things which have nothing to do with you right now.  But when it is the right time, God’s appointed time, those other things will intersect with your life, and God will be faithful to deliver on every promise He has made.  God knows the plans He has for you, and they are to prosper you, not to harm you.  He is conforming you to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ, and He is working all things together for your good.  Keep walking in the obedience of faith, seeking first His Kingdom and delighting yourself in Him, and He will give you the desires of your heart.  It will be then that you will possess your own Promised Land.
