And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. Genesis 2:2-3
God’s work was to create the heavens and the earth and everything that has life. When His work was done, He stopped creating. He was finished with creating. Creation was done. He rested.
Jesus’ work was to reconcile us with God by fulfilling the requirements of righteousness before God and by offering Himself as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world once and for all. When His work was done, He cried out from the cross, “It is finished.” Reconciliation between God and man was completed. Now He is resting at the right hand of the Father until all His enemies are made a footstool under His feet.
Our work is to believe in Jesus, the One God sent. Our work is to rest in His finished work, and not harden our hearts to His voice when He speaks through His Word or by the Holy Spirit. Our work is to believe that God has already overcome every problem we will ever face and to trust that He is working everything out in our favor at all times. Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Our work is to receive this gift.
Are you doing your work?
